Craig Berube Wishes To Coach For Maple Leafs In The Coming Future

The St. Louis Blues just fired Craig Berube, their experienced Stanley Cup-winning head coach, but he isn’t prepared to put up his coaching hat just yet. He’s launched a campaign to go back on an NHL bench and has made several appearances on radio and podcasts, where he’s expressed his desire to continue coaching.

Craig Berube Wishes To Coach For Maple Leafs In The Coming Future

Berube stated during a conversation with Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill of The Leafs Nation,

“I want to coach again. I enjoy it. I want to get back in the game.”

Berube has freely discussed his desire to become a coach in a number of interviews. This includes a recent one on The Leafs Nation with writer Nick Alberga and retired NHL player Jay Rosehill.
“If I were ever to coach there for the Toronto Maple Leafs, it would be an honor.” It’s (one of) if not the best hockey market in the world. A great organization that does everything they can to try to win,” he said of the idea, per Sportsnet.
Naturally, it would be strange for Berube to say, “Hell no,” in response to a question about coaching the club on a show centered around the Leafs, but the idea is intriguing.

He has no intentions to retire; he is now in the Philadelphia region enjoying quality time with his family. Berube highlights how keen he is to match well with a general manager and an organization that is moving in the correct manner.

His ultimate objective is to win another championship ring, demonstrating his desire to mentor in front of a competitive Canadian market.

Sheldon Keefe, the Leafs’ current coach, hasn’t been able to lead the club over the finish line, so it makes sense that Brad Treliving, the team’s new general manager, would want to bring in a different coach.

Berube would fit right in. He has already led a squad to the Cup. What prevented them from bringing the Leafs their first since the 1960s?

Although that sounds like a good idea in and of itself, coaching in Toronto is very different from coaching practically anyplace else in the NHL. That position is now the hardest in the NHL and may be among the hardest in all of sports due to the high expectations, lack of success, and constant scrutiny placed on the club.

The hockey community has taken notice of Berube’s push to take the bench again. Berube is an intriguing possibility for any NHL club looking for a coach to lead them to victory, whether they are headed to Toronto, Ottawa, or somewhere else.

How many penalty minutes did Craig Berube have?

Between 1986 and 2003, Berube participated in 1,054 NHL regular season games. Known as an enforcer in the NHL, he finished his career with 3,149 penalty minutes, ranking sixth all-time. Among players who have played at least 1000 games in the league, he is the least productive with 159 points.

Has Craig Berube won a Stanley Cup?

The Blues’ 2.82 goals per game place them 26th in the NHL. and, at 8.4%, have the league’s second-worst power play (7 for 83). In 2019, the 57-year-old Berube led the Blues to the Stanley Cup final.
